Castlebar Tennis Club is happy to offer a wide variety of Adult tennis initiatives. Our Adult Tennis Programme is designed for all ages, genders and abilities at different times throughout the day and week.
Before we get into the events available, it is important to emphasise the International Tennis Number and the part that it will play in every player’s tennis in the future.
The ITN is your tennis handicap. The ITN is an international tennis number that represents a player’s general level of play. The idea is that every tennis player worldwide will have an ITN.
Under this system players will be rated from ITN 1 – ITN 10. ITN 1 represents a high level player (holding an ATP / WTA ranking or of an equivalent playing standard) and ITN 10 is a player that is starting to play competitively (can serve and return) on a full court using a normal ITF approved ball.
To facilitate the rating of players the ITF have developed a Description of Standards and an objective On Court Assessment both of which can be used to rate players in the absence of competition results.
The ITN Description of Standards has avoided rating players purely on the technical
assessment of individual shots. Instead it has used as its basis:
- the general characteristics of various playing levels
- the five-game / tactical situations of tennis (e.g. serving, returning, both at
baseline, approaching, passing)
- the game-style of the player.
Find below some of the most popular activities organised by the club:
Coaching: Coaching is available year round and is open to all standards
in groups or individually. Improving your game is not just for the high performance
player but also helps the recreational player reach their potential and enjoy the
game even more. The coaching team, headed by Director of Tennis, Garrett Barry,
look forward to helping all our members to learn and play better tennis in 2011.

Tennis Clinics: Tennis Clinics are a NEW Initiative introduced this year by our Director of Tennis, Garrett Barry. The clinics are divided into two categories: Stroke Enhancement Clinics and Tactical/Strategy Clinics. Players are given the opportunity to experience the intricacies of the Stroke/Tactic theme for the given session. Players can choose the clinic that suits them best, based on level (players grouped by International Tennis Number ITN) and personal needs.

TGIF(Thank God It's Friday): Another NEW initiative that brings our club members together on Friday nights. On Friday nights (excluding FUN FRIDAYS), Garrett endeavours to give our club members an opportunity to play competitive tennis with players of similar standard. This in effect is Castlebar TC’s Club Night & is a great opportunity not only to enjoy a game of tennis whatever your ability but also to meet other club members in a friendly and welcoming environment.
Fun Fridays: The 1st Friday of every month sees a Fun Friday Competition in Castlebar TC. Anything up to 50 of our members come together on the night to play in an organised doubles or mixed doubles event. The club is indebted to its fantastic sponsors for their continued support for the Fun Friday events over the years.
Ladies Morning Tennis & Coaching: On a given morning every week (currently Fridays), our lady members are invited to participate in a Coaching/Practice session.
Inter Club Friendly Matches: Inter Club friendly matches will be arranged on various occasions throughout the year. This helps to create a TEAM atmosphere within the club for our members & also is a great advertisement for the club.
Year Round Ladder Competition: The ladder is designed to give our members the opportunity to compete on a regular basis. the rules for the new 2012 ladder are available on the link below.

Cardio-Tennis(Volley away those unwanted pounds): Research has shown that tennis is one of the healthiest sports to play. Providing a healthy work out on the court has been taken a step further with the introduction of Cardio-Tennis.
Cardio-Tennis is a new, fun group tennis activity that combines tennis with a high-energy cardio-vascular workout. The Cardio Tennis curriculum allows the participant to burn more calories within short cycles of high intensity workout and periods of rest, similar to interval training. You don’t need to have ever played tennis to enjoy & get a work out from Cardio Tennis.
How it works?
The Cardio Tennis Program includes a short dynamic warm-up, a cardio workout phase and a cool-down phase. Each phase has drills specifically designed to be fun, challenging and to get you moving and your heart rate pumping. The goal is to get a person’s heart rate in their aerobic training zone (65-85% of their maximum recommended heart rate) for the entire session and keep it there.
While Cardio Tennis is not designed to make you a great player, you do improve because you hit so many forehands, backhands, and volleys while getting a fun, healthy workout. All Cardio Tennis workouts are more of a social experience than other fitness activities where you are confined to a boring machine. In America, 63% of participants thought Cardio Tennis was a better workout than their normal fitness routine and 79% said Cardio Tennis was more fun!
